CHAPTER 22: WOO-HOO TO A GOD?

Hank gave me homework. Yeah, you already saw my eyes rolling. I wasn’t in school anymore. Hank insisted that the only way for me to get ahead of Quanta was to research the Shar.

Once I thought about that, I agreed with him. I spent that evening on my balcony with a mocha I picked up from a coffee shop, my laptop on the tiny table. Two smoky-black squirrels chased each other all over a gigantic oak near my window.

Miz Lady came out and sat to watch them. I gave her head a pat (which she ignored) and dug into my search.

Hank nailed me pretty good. I hated not knowing anything. I wanted to understand why and how things worked. Sometimes, before you could solve a problem set, you needed to work out the reason the formula was created.

Scanning through websites about Shar, I felt overwhelmed by the amount of junk information. A lot of drippy love from the media and lists of “10 Things You Didn’t Know About the Shar.” I popped on one of those and crossed eight of them off the list as not true and the other two I didn’t think were physically possible. At least, I hoped not. Eep.

Joule figured prominently in many of the pages, including many on-line fan clubs with fan art. I disappeared down that rabbit hole longer than I would care to admit, though I drew the line at drawings of him like an anime figure. You know, big, trembling eyes and pointed chin. Didn’t like Joule as anime. I had fun picturing Quanta as one, though. As I laughed at the image, the tightness in my chest I hadn’t noticed loosened a little.

I picked up Miz Lady and put her in my lap. She nuzzled me with a cold nose. I scratched the side of her neck as my mind gnawed on my options like a dog on a bone.

Both Kendell and Devon taught me to look for facts and logic. Most annoying. Sometimes you just wanted something and facts got in the way. Now though, with so much worthless information flying around and experts wanting to put their spin on it, facts were hard to determine. If newspapers or books picked up an incorrect piece of information published, it became a truth. Petra told me about an actor widely reported as having stuttered as a child. Studio fiction to appeal to lovesick teenage girls. Once trade books picked it up in their pages, he forever explained to fans it wasn’t true.

I scrubbed my hands through my hair and wanted to scream. How did I navigate through this mess of junk?

What facts did I know existed?

Dates. Those were pretty concrete, recorded in a news feed at the time they occurred. Navigating around the cat in my lap, I picked my yellow legal pad and made a list with my gel pen. Date the Shar arrived. Date Joule showed up. Date they first recruited for the Superhero Portal.
